At the very heart of the South Island, between the West Coast and Canterbury, is Arthur's Pass National Park. Covering over 1,000 square kilometres, it's a park of two halves, with heavy rainforest and formidable gorges to the west, and more accessible valleys, tracks and broad river beds to the east.
Sitting on the east coast, just 80 minutes south of Christchurch, Ashburton is considered one of the gateways to the South Island. Located in the middle of the Canterbury Plains, the town thrives on farming and other pastoral industries, and enjoys a varied landscape, from the temperate Rakaia River – a great spot for some fly fishing or kayaking – to the ski fields of Mount Hutt and, of course, the beautiful beaches along the coast.
Conveniently located just over an hour southeast of Christchurch, the circular Banks Peninsula juts out from the South Island's central east coast. It was first sighted by Captain Cook in the 1760s, during a circumnavigation of New Zealand, but he mistook the headland for an island, and never ventured further.
The largest city of the South Island, Christchurch is also New Zealand's oldest, having been granted its Royal Charter in 1856. Known as the ‘Garden City’, for its high proportion of green spaces, Christchurch has the feel of an old English city, thanks to the ambitions of early settlers who wanted to recreate the similarly-named area of Christ Church in Oxford.

Water plays a major role here, whether it's the therapeutic mineral waters of the spas and hot pools; jet boating; water slides; or kayaking through gorges and ravines.
Our guide to Kaikoura. On the east coast of the South Island, 180km north of Christchurch, on State Highway 1, the Kaikoura Peninsula is a magnet for marine life. Albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels flock to this coastline and it's one of the best places in the world to see them up close.

The port of Lyttelton is situated on the north shore of Lyttelton Harbour and close to the Banks Peninsula. It's a popular spot for cruise ships and cargo vessels, but it's also the starting point for many smaller cruising tours such as the Black Cat Cruises day trip to Quail Island.
Our guide to Methven by our Christchurch local expert - 35 kilometres north of Ashburton, nestled on the western edge of the famous Canterbury Plains, is the charming village of Methven. Home to just 1300 permanent residents, it's a place with a distinctly split personality.
Home to all but one of New Zealand's 20 highest peaks, including the highest and eponymous Aoraki (Mount Cook), this national park is 700km2 of predictably mountainous terrain and glaciers. Together with the neighbouring Westland Tai Poutini National Park, it forms the Te Wahipounamu South Westland World Heritage Site.
