Best Theatre and Cinema in Christchurch City
Local Recommendations from our My Guide Christchurch team
Christchurch has always had a vibrant arts scene. Don't be fooled by the small number of Theatres in Christchurch, though. They're a dedicated bunch, and have played an important role in revitalising the city's spirits.
Christchurch Theatres were focused around the Christchurch Arts Centre, a collection of 23 heritage buildings in the CBD. All were significantly damaged in the 2011 earthquakes. Similarly, the theatres of Gloucester Street and Worcester Street, are also in the severely affected Red Zone, but rebuilding is progressing swiftly. Further out, try the smaller repertory theatres in Ilam, trendy Addington (home to the Riccarton Players) and Shirley and Scarborough Park. The city has not let disaster affect their fondness for entertainment, you just have to go a little further out to see productions in their temporary homes.
